From the Desk of Paul W. McVicker:

"In my years of experience as an attorney in family law and litigation, I have seen the stress and toll that conflict and litigation causes families and children. Sometimes with disasterous effects. As a result, I am a big fan of mediation and ADR services.

"Although mediation of disputes is not appropriate in all cases, an experienced mediator can help parties achieve an amicable resolution of their conflict and disagreements. Why mediate? For one reason, it's required in the state of Washington in Dissolution cases where there are children. For another, it can assist the parties in resolving their differences with minimal costs and conflict.

"Whether or not parties are able to resolve their conflicts through mediation, or other Alternative Dispute Resolution processes - arbitration, med-arb, collaborative law or others, each party should have good legal advise to guide them through the legal process and provide substantivel legal counsel.

"To those for whom mediation, or another ADR service, may not be appropriate, please do not represent yourself. As Abraham Lincoln said, 'The man who has himself as an attorney has a fool for a client.' When you are unable to settle conflicts appropriate for litigation, an experienced, seasoned attorney can help."
